Of course, the Great Depression and the Covid-19 pandemic were global catastrophes. As much division and distrust was fomented, as was random acts of spontaneous generosity.

Hear hear. I just feel it's a pity it took such situations for people to wake up from their slumber. But just the act of waking up even 1 person more, that could cascade in critical thinking being again at the forefront!

The consumer society and social media all about Me me and I showing what you have kills the equality felt in society previously by the majority, I am speaking about Australia.

Large flash housing kills communities as no one is on the street interacting with their neighbours and no stay at home mothers changes things also.

Agree with this article on the periphery but the welfare state is shrinking and military funding is aiming to take a greater share in the so called West.

I think what you identified is a symptom, not a cause. Flashy houses and immaculate lawns don't necessitate social distance. But that cause is more likely the financialization of our economy/lifes than it has to do with the welfare state.

I was just touching on 1 subject that had been pegging me for the better part of 10-15 years and wanted to write it out.

I agree that services are being reduced, taxes increased and military spending (go long defensive stocks!) increased. At a certain point I imagine that those "safe" countries will be closing their doors to foreigners that did well in their own countries despite their respective governments best efforts to the contrary. I just hope it won't be too late for me to move as well.

There's a lot more to say about financialization and how is distorts our lives and our souls. But that's a topic for another day. Maybe even the subject of a book 😁
